Non-self closing hinges ......... mostly 3/8" inset.   From top, left to right .....3/4" inset, 5/8" inset, &  1/2" insets shown top ..... 3/8" lip door variable inset hinge shown in chrome middle right. Two hinges shown with decorative "shams" that are nailed to the front of the door. Additional picture of only various insets shown next .........

Inset Hinges:  Top to Bottom ...... Vertical rows ...... 3/8" inset, 1/2" inset, 5/8" inset, Top .... variable inset ...... middle & bottom   3/4" inset. All hinges shown this photo are for 3/8" lip doors.   Other lip widths have been made ...... most common was 1/2" lip width ....... those hinges very scarce today.

Self Closing Hinges.  Slab overlay in two rows on left and 3/8" inset on two rows on right. Hinge top left is an Ajax hinge ..... five knuckle. Left row, third up from the bottom is a hinge with an extra long frame wing, a "total concept" hinge.

Surface mount hinges: Top to bottom, left to right: interior door butt hinge, "H" & "HL" colonial hinges. Second row: old surface mount hinges. Third row: Surface mount "H" & "HL" hinges for flush doors; surface mount "deco" hinge; butt hinge; butterfly hinge. Bottom Row: 1672-AE "h" hinge, butt hinges, and butterfly hinge.

Specialty HingesLeft to right, top to bottom: 30 degree reverse bevel hinges, "easy on" hinge, demountable hinges, cup hinges. and pin hinges.

Demountable Hinges. Top to bottom, left to right:  Variable overlay with hidden screws, variable overlay with exposed screws, slab partial wrap, 3/8" inset, double demountable.

Wrap Hinges: Top row  all non-self closing.   Left to right:  # 5988-3   3/4" inset ( installs like a butt hinge to edge of face frame );   3/4" inset full wrap furniture hinge / for 13/16" door thickness / fancy tips / frame wing has screws into edge of face frame and  angle screw to back of face frame;    3/8" inset partial wrap hinge in chrome & brass finish.   Middle Row:   Partial wrap self closing hinges in slab overlay and 3/8" inset. Bottom Row:  full wrap hinges ( all shown for slab overlay ) ..... several different  screw combinations / also some slotted holes for adjustments. Wrap hinges have a fixed position in relation to the face frame. .......Most of the time you should figure to have an equal "overlay" of the door over the opening onto the face frame ( style & rails ..... styles being the vertical part of the face frame and rails being the horizontal part of the face frame ). Should you have two doors butting together on the pull/knob side you need to figure taking that into account.

Slab Overlay HingesTop Left: Slab overlay Provincial style non-self closing in Machine Copper and again in BW ( white and brass ) finish,  Self closing BB  ( burnished brass ) finish hinge.   Bottom Row: on left "round back" frame wing machine copper hinge, "scoop wing" AE ( antique "English" or brass ) hinge, chrome non-self closing hinge.  All of these hinges are "variable overlay" ....... neither the door nor opening  do not have to be square to be able to use the hinge.
