Amerock Purchased National Lock Door Locks and Nation Lock Cabinet Hardware in the mid- 1980's. National had produced several patio door locks and Amerock continued to produce those under the Amerock brand. .........Later Amerock sold the Lock Business. I understand that business no longer exists.
Patio doors with wood frames and doors were developed to take the place of / and for replacement door units for aluminum patio door units. Brand names include Atrium and Morgan Doors. To keep the glass area as large as possible they were built with narrower styles and rails than conventional doors. There are still Patio Door Units made ..... now usually with a much more complex lockset that was used in the beginning. The new ones use a mortise lockset, usually incorporating the deadbolt and lever set into the same unit. Anderson and Pella are two current brand names. There are probably many more.
The narrower style of Patio Door Units ( the vertical wood around the glass ) will not accommodate a normal backset lock ( 2 & 3/8" backset ). National Lock developed a 2" backset lock that would fit. Actually there were three locks that I am aware of ..... two passage ( non-locking ) lever sets and a deadbolt. The levers were a French Curve Lever Set of solid brass and another more traditional, Stubby Lever Set. The "Stubby Lever" I have seen only in a antique brass finish. It may have also come in a bright brass .... I am not sure. The French Curve Lever and Deadbolt came in either a bright brass or antique brass.
Patio
Door Levers: On left is "Stubby Lever" in an Antique Brass finish. On
lock block display is a French Curve Lever in Antique Brass. Below are
the two halves of a French Curve Lever set in bright brass, one half
assembled and one half disassembled. To disassemble the lever you use a
screwdriver to unscrew the "button" from inside the shaft ..... note that the
button threads are left hand ( backwards ). To change the "hand" of the
lever set you disassemble the lever and "flip flop" the lever .... reassemble.
The lever shown on the block is a standard projection lever. The latch shown is
a 2 & 3/8" backset ..... made the same as a 2" backset ..... just longer .......
and not compatible with the narrow style of the patio door system.
A special feature and peculiar to the patio door passage lever lock is that the outside lever was made to be close to the door ( a short projection from the door ) enabling a sliding screen door to be built into the frame of the patio door unit. The short projection allows the screen to slide and by the lever set. A full projection or standard projection knob or lever would interfere with the screen door. If you are using the screen on your door this must be taken into account when obtaining a replacement.
Fixing or replacing a broken Patio Door Lock:
I do not know of any original equipment replacement parts. What I had is now gone. I have worked hard to find suitable replacements. I now have in stock, or can obtain fairly quickly, replacement deadbolts with 2" backsets. They are of higher quality than the ones that they replace, thus should have a long life. They are available in single cylinder ( keyed one side ), and double cylinder ( keyed both sides ). They come in either an antique or bright brass finish. ( The double cylinder deadbolts are a special order item ).
The lever sets are a much harder item to find new. I believe that I have found a latch unit that is compatible with the French Curve Lever set ...... with a slight modification to that set. I believe that they will work well. The same latch could be used with the "Stubby Lever" if you decide to mount the lever vertically instead of horizontally. These are extremely good latches with heavy springs.
French
Curve Lever Set. Note "button" with threads on end ........ also
the raised square on the lever that matches up with the recess on the post at
the top of the photo. .......You may note that the raised square has an added
area on two of the points and a match in the recess.
I am in the process of finding knobs to use with the 2" latches that I have access to, but they will be full projection and cannot be used where the screen door is still in use. So far I have only found knobs in a bright brass finish.
